Day 1 Thanks but no thanks Google Translate

A simple breakfast at our hotel, then a walk through the city of Guayaquil to Santay Island.  A National Protected Area across the Guayus River from Guayaquil.  It's known for the 47 families who have lived there since the 1950's and crocodiles.  We went to visit the crocodiles.

Kinda boring.  First they are in a pen, second, crocodiles don't move much, in fact, we watch them blink their eyes.  Well, only one of the five blinked.  Two had their mouths open, (as crocodiles do) and another was resting his nose on either a wrapped Big Mac or a disposable diaper.  We walked around six miles today.  A good walk.

On the way back we were looking for a place to eat.  Authentic Ecuadorian cuisine.  Around four o'clock, we were REALLY looking for a place to eat.  Most of our trek was through an industrial area, once we got back to civilization we settled on the restaurant below.  Of course, no one spoke English but we had our trusty Google Translate.  The results below.

At the hotel we googled 'tallarin'.....Noodle.

Finally, as we were finishing our meal, something caught my eye.  It moved between Gloria and me on the floor, I was seated next to some stairs, it hopped the stairs, looked at me and my now mostly clean plate and then scampered up the stairs.  Ratatouille you ask?  No just a common brown rat.  Now, in all the restaurants we have eaten in throughout the world, this is the first time I have had a rat size me up while eating a meal.  Glad he swung by at the end of the meal, and not at the beginning.

Also, because of Google Translates inability to translate, we realized this wasn't Authentic Ecuadorian cuisine, but a Chinese restaurant.  Come to think of it the chef didn't look that Ecuadorian.

Finally, we fly out to the Galapagos Islands tomorrow.  No WiFi.  I will post our daily updates when we return on March 16.

Do we have this in the US?

  1. Wow, interesting! Cannabis hair products and a rat watching you eat in a public..... travel brings out the good and not-so-good experiences.
